Smartply Is Smart Answer In National Trust For Scotland Project

Smartply OSB has displayed its versatility and environmental credentials in a prestigious National Trust project at the Culloden Battlefield.

A striking new visitor centre encompassing strict environmental standards has been constructed using SmartPly OSB for the roofing and structural wall partitioning. The battlefield on Culloden Moor, five miles from Inverness in Scotland, marks the final chapter in a civil war that had waged since 1688.

Alexander Bennett, coordinator at the visitor centre for National Trust for Scotland, said: "We have very high environmental standards and SmartPly OSB has all the important features we need to achieve them. We are very pleased to be using it."

The 2300 sq m state-of-the art centre is being built by Morrison Construction and is due to open in late Autumn. The sensitive nature of the largely rural site is reflected in the timber frame construction and a curved, grassed roof offering views of the surrounding countryside. The new visitor centre has been designed to blend better with the landscape than its predecessor, to be much larger and to be clear of the main historical area of fighting. SmartPly Oriented Strand Board (OSB) panels have proved especially effective in the production of the curved roof components.

SmartPly Roof is an engineered, loadbearing wood-based panel product, free of knots and voids, and suitable for structural use in humid situations. As all SmartPly OSB products are FSC certified, meeting the most demanding environmental requirements.
